    Krüger fick också sin fru från Wismar, Charlotte Schmidt, dotter till en redare Johann Matthias Schmidt som dog vid giftermålet och en roligt kärleksfull, vacker mamma som spenderade sina ansenliga tillgångar tillsammans med sina graciösa döttrar i ett socialt lyxigt liv. När den unga kvinnan Charlotte Krüger gifte sig 1815 var hon säkert väldigt oerfaren i sina nya husliga uppgifter, och det var bara tack vare hennes extraordinära flit, samvetsgrannhet och ekonomi som hon utvecklade sig till en god hemmafru trots sin otillräckliga uppväxt. Hon hade ärvt skönheten från sin mamma, var en helhjärtad, kärleksfull kvinna som tog hand om man och barn såväl som sin hushållning, men hon var av något klumpig karaktär, och hennes tankar gick inte långt utöver familjens räckvidd.

    Om det faktum att talangfulla söner ärvde sin visdom från sin mor ofta har bekräftats, är detta inte fallet med vår far, som å andra sidan hade slående likheter i detalj med sin fars karaktär och disposition, varför det gjorda att jag också kom min farfar lite närmare.

    Notes:

    He was master of a Russian brig, and on June 20th, 1825, was appointed commandant of the Riga pilots, retiring from that post in 1842 on the ground of ill-health, with a pension of 400 silver roubles (about £40). For eminent services performed by him in rescuing the crews of Russian and Swedish ships in danger of shipwreck, numbering altogether more than 120 souls, he received five gold medals, and various certificates of honour, all of which are now in the possession of our cousin Henry William Satow of Bangor, North Wales. After his retirement, Heinrich and his wife went back to live at Wismar.



    Copies of crayon portraits of Heinrich and Catherine were extant at Wismar and are probably still in the possession of the municipal authorities. Heinrich left 200 silver roubles to the town at his death.

    Notes:

    Frau Panthenius says that at the time of his son Theodor's engagement to Pauline Schniedewind (which was about 1858) he had a timber business in a suburb of Riga on the other side of the Düna. From the back of the house one looked over the garden to the large timber yard, which stretched down to the river bank. He had a very capable bookkeeper, named Eussler, who later bought the business from him. This gentleman greatly loved and respected the old pair, conducted himself like a son to them, which was a source of great comfort to Theodor and his wife, who lived so far away. Frau Panthenius often visited the old people with her father, and both the garden and the work in the timber yard had a great attraction for her. It was very interesting to see how cleverly the workmen dragged one log after another ashore from the big rafts that floated in the water.



    When Frau Panthenius grew older she gladly sat with the old people who were so good and friendly. Aunt Anna made me very sorry, she was almost always ill, crippled with gout, suffered great pain in the eyes and in her hands, which she could hardly use. She never complained, but bore her severe sufferings patiently and wore a touching resigned expression. The letters of Theodor and Pauline and of Henry were the sunshine of their lives, and they were quite cheered up when they were able to report the progress made by their grandchildren and the little details of their life.



    It was a heavy grief to Uncle Andrew that he could but seldom see his sons, and it was a great joy to him when Theodor came to Riga on a business journey. When Theodor came there with Fedor and Loue, they all stayed over the winter for the sake of Frau Schniedewind, who died that December. And then in the summer of 1871 Theodor brought Fedor over, and left him there for the whole summer. The old people greatly enjoyed having their grandson with them. Andrew Satow was a Russian subject.

    My father, as stated before, was born in 1801, and lost his father in 1815. His further education was provide for by his elder brothers. He knew some Latin, for I remember that once, when I was unable to answer the question "What is the Latin for beer?" he told me it was "cerevisia". However his schooling was interrupted at the age of 11, when Napoleon's invasion of Russia took place, and he was sent on a voyage round the world, from which he did not return till 1814. My brother David thought he was shipped as a cabin-boy. When his schooldays were over, he went into a Riga house of business, the head of which was named Schnakenburg. This gentleman was very good to him, and helped him come to London in 1825, where he started in business with a loan of £500 from this excellent friend, and of a similar sum from his elder brother, Andrew. It was not till 1846 that he became naturalized as a British subject, and the Record Office describes him as being a native of Wismar. Being a Lutheran, it was natural that he should attend a nonconformist chapel rather than an Anglican church. I think he usually went to the Poultry chapel. Anyhow, it was in this way that he became acquainted with the Mason family.
